The authors/creators credited for Singin’ in the Rain – Senior (the school-edition adaptation of the stage musical) are the same writers who created the original musical:
Book (script): Betty Comden and Adolph Green
Songs / Music: Nacio Herb Brown (music) and Arthur Freed (lyrics)
These writers created the material for the 1952 film Singin' in the Rain.
The stage musical and the later senior edition adapt that film using the same script and songs, with edits made for length and performers.
The Senior edition is a shortened educational adaptation designed for performers age 55 and over.
Set in Hollywood during the late 1920s, Singin’ in the Rain takes place at the moment when the film industry is making the difficult transition from silent movies to “talkies.” Silent film star Don Lockwood seems to have everything going for him—fame, fortune, and a glamorous screen partnership with the beautiful but self-absorbed Lina Lamont. Off-screen, however, Don can barely tolerate Lina’s vanity and grating voice.
When talking pictures suddenly become the new trend, the studio scrambles to convert Don and Lina’s latest silent film into a musical. The problem quickly becomes clear: Lina’s shrill speaking voice is disastrous on microphone. Don’s best friend, the quick-witted Cosmo Brown, and aspiring actress Kathy Selden come up with a clever solution—Kathy secretly records the dialogue and songs to replace Lina’s voice.
As the new movie becomes a sensation, Lina tries to take credit for Kathy’s talent. During the film’s premiere, Don, Cosmo, and the studio head reveal the truth in a humorous and satisfying finale, allowing Kathy to finally receive the recognition she deserves.
Filled with iconic numbers like “Good Morning,” “Make ’Em Laugh,” and the title song “Singin’ in the Rain,” the show celebrates friendship, perseverance, and the magic of Hollywood’s golden age.
